A graduate of New York University’s Film School, Robert Neal Marshall has spent over 40 years in the entertainment industry, leaving his mark both behind and in front of the camera. For several years he was a Casting Associate with the renowned Pat Moran, C.S.A. (known for The Wire, Hairspray, and Homicide: Life on the Street), where he was on the team to win an Emmy® for casting for Game Change starring Julianne Moore, and the team that received an Emmy® Nomination for the casting of Veep starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Robert’s casting expertise extends to multiple independent stage and screen projects, where his keen eye for talent has shaped many productions.

Beyond casting, Robert thrives in a variety of freelance production roles. His credits include serving as Line Producer, Production Manager, and 1st Assistant Director for several feature films and shorts. He was Co-Casting Director and Production Manager for the feature film The Night Watchmen, starring James Remar, Matt Servitto, and Rain Pryor. His early work took him to Berlin, Germany, where he worked as a Script Supervisor with Regina Ziegler Productions. He also collaborated on industrials for Jack Lieb Productions in Chicago and worked as Post Production Manager for Shirley Clarke on Ornette Coleman: Made in America.

Robert’s passion for documentary filmmaking shines through in his projects, including Back from the Light, a film available online and through streaming platforms, and Three Queens – An International Rendezvous, a documentary released in 2008 to coincide with the final journey of the Cunard ocean liner Queen Elizabeth 2. His documentary Mr. Ocean Liner premiered aboard the Queen Mary 2 and made its New York debut at Lincoln Center as part of “Cinematic Passages: The Ocean Liner on Screen.”

Robert’s work in the West End of London in the early 1980s provided invaluable experience as Assistant to legendary producer Richard Armitage on hit shows like Me and My Girl, starring Emma Thompson and Robert Lindsay, and High Society, starring Natasha Richardson. While in London, Robert also directed and produced the West End debut of Is There Life After High School? at the Donmar Warehouse.

As a playwright, Robert’s musical Rumpelstiltskin’s Daughter has been presented at the prestigious Assembly Rooms at the Edinburgh Festival, has seen regional productions in Maryland, Richmond, Virginia, and is currently in development for the West End of London with a soon to be announced Olivier Award winning Director/Choreographer at the helm. His play 41N 50W, based on the 1912 U.S. Senate hearings on the Titanic, has showcased in both London and Southampton, and is also in development for a larger production in the U.K. and U.S.

In addition to his work behind the scenes, Robert is no stranger to being in front of the camera. He’s appeared in the final season of House of Cards, as well as Bill Tilghman and the Outlaws in a co-starring role as producer William Selig. Other on-screen credits include playing FDNY Captain Jay Jonas in the Emmy-nominated Countdown to Ground Zero for the History Channel and Captain Richard Phillips in Somali Pirate Takedown for the Discovery Channel. He also had a blast performing in Ken Davenport’s  Awesome 80’s Prom both Off-Broadway and at the Baltimore Hippodrome.

Since 2009, Robert has been a regular guest lecturer with Cunard Line’s award-winning Insights® Enrichment Programme, presenting on film, theatre, and even sharing rare footage from D-Day captured by his grandfather, a WWII newsreel cameraman. He’s also given a unique talk about his personal experience with a “Widow Maker” heart attack, his near-death experience, and his recovery, which became the subject of his documentary Back From the Light.

In 2012, Robert was recruited by the Columbia Festival of the Arts (CFA) as Programming Manager, and later served as Executive Producer and Executive Director, helping CFA transition to a fully virtual platform during the Covid-19 pandemic. Under his leadership, CFA weathered the storm and came back stronger with a return to in-person programming. After a successful three-year tenure, Robert is now excited to return to his independent projects and casting.
